All business owners should look into fire risk assessments in order to avert any potential problems before they start. All fire risk assessments are required by law to meet The Fire Safety Order 2005 – UK Fire Regulations. You are responsible for the fire safety of your property as well as those who are in and on your business property. You must carry out assessments regularly in order to make sure you are up to code.
The employer or some other person in control of the property is usually the one responsible for assessments. If you are the legally designated “responsible person,” you will need to arrange your fire risk assessments in order to identify any potential fire risks and find ways to fix them. If you are an employer or other person in control, you can assign this duty to an outside contractor if you feel more comfortable with having an expert look over your fire safety.
In this case, you want someone who will be responsible for fire prevention measures such as alarms and sprinkler systems. This person should also make sure all people on the property can evacuate safely in case of a fire. The responsible person also needs to draw up a risk plan to identify potential sources of fires and ways to resolves any deficiencies that can result in harm to anyone.
Whether you do it yourself or hire someone else to do it, it is important that you schedule and review your fire risk assessments on a regular basis. You not only want to be in compliance with the law, but you also want to make sure you do not create an environment that can endanger anyone on the property. Remember if you fail to provide these assessments, you will have broken the law and will face consequences.
