Competence & experience combined with ethical practices and Integrity are key ingredients when it comes to employing Health and Safety Consultants for your business.

With the internet so vast and widespread with a mix of content, some good and some bad, it is not so difficult to find a range of Health and Safety Consultants to chose however, you need to be safe in the knowledge that the one you choose is competent.

But how do you know if you have found the right consultancy to work with.

Firstly, check what professional memberships they hold this demonstrates a certain degree of training and experience;
Are they a member of  The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register – OSHCR

The web based register is only open to those health and safety consultants who have met certain high standards within their professional bodies. This is the  Government accepted recommendation outlined in the report, ‘Common Sense, Common Safety’ to professionalise health and safety consultants.

Are they a Chartered members of their professional bodies such as;

    • Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
    • Chartered Institute of Environmental Health  – CIEH
    • British Occupational Hygiene Society – BOHS
    • Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors – IEHF
    • The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management – IIRSM
    • Association for Project Safety (APS)

Also, check they are able to cater to your company sector, i.e Construction, Office, warehouse, Retail, etc.

Ask the Safety Consultant how many years experience he or she has within your industry. The company must have sufficient experience in the Health and Safety consultancy field.

They must be concerned with providing you services which are beneficial for you and your business.

Health and Safety Consultants should operate legally and have adequate Professional Imdemnity insurance.

After all, you as a business owner or employer want to achieve a healthy and safe working environment.
