On October 17th 2011 a Dorset Company received a fine after being prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive.  The fine came as a result of one of their workers being injured while working on the Verplas Ltd site in Dorset back in 2010.

Kelvin Davey, a lorry driver, was hit by a fork lift truck.  The reason for the accident was clear to the Health and Safety Executives who investigated the site.  The area which keeps vehicles away from pedestrians was not of an adequate size.  It is extremely important that all efforts are made to keep pedestrians safe from the threat of vehicles, be they fork lift trucks, cars, vans and trucks. Without providing adequate space and signs to keep employees safe companies are putting people’s lives at risk on a daily basis.

Injuries Could Have Cost Worker his Career

Mr Davey suffered awful injuries after being hit by the fork lift truck.  Both his left and right legs were broken and he also broke both of his ankles in the accident.  It was thought that he would be unable to continue working due to the extent of his injuries, however he has gone on to make a fantastic recovery and is now back working for the Dorset Manufacturing firm.

Verplas Ltd pleaded guilty at Bournemouth Magistrates Court.  They breached Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and as a result were fined £10,000.  The company was also ordered to pay the court costs which equalled £2,407.

Organise Your Work Areas

Health and Safety consultants are able to help you stay within the laws and do all that is expected of you in the eyes of the law.  There are many regulations surrounding the mixture of vehicles and pedestrians, and ignoring them can cost the loss of lives.

Having a small work area is no excuse when it comes to safety.  If you have fork lift trucks operating in a space, or any vehicle, there must be enough room to keep pedestrians in that area safe from harm and out of the way of the vehicles.

Ask for Professional Assistance

When it comes to health and safety you cannot afford to take short cuts.  If you are unsure of the laws and regulations regarded safety, contact the health and safety consultants who will be able to give you the assistance you require.  By meeting all of the regulations and laws you can be sure the environment is safe for your employees and that you are more protected from prosecution should something go wrong.

One of the health and safety services that are available to all business is the health and safety training courses.  These are not just available for employees; you can find many courses aimed at business owners and managers who have a huge responsibility of creating a safe workplace.  Veritas Consultants organise many different training courses including:

All just goes to show the importance of health and safety rules being adhered to. Sadly corners are often cut because of time and money constraints.
